North Lowestoft: Creative Communities

The North Lowestoft Heritage Action Zone (HAZ), works to revive the town’s historic heart by maximising the potential of historic assets. Through training, events, and heritage projects, the HAZ partnership engages the local community in the heritage of the area and engenders a sense of pride of place.

Poetry People commission

In October 2020, Poetry People, were commissioned by the North Lowestoft HAZ, to deliver a community poetry project celebrating North Lowestoft High Street and the unique narrow alleyways that lead to the sea, known as The Scores.

The final video poem, called ‘Right Up Your Street’, featured residents and shop keepers from 17 local businesses, alongside gathered memories and archival photographs. The 10-minute poem honoured the history of this area and engaged the community in North Lowestoft’s heritage and long association with the sea.

‘Right Up Your Street’ was released during the pandemic when activities were moving online. The project used social media to connect with the community and gather views and stories of the history of the High Street. Working with local poet and historian, Dean Parkin, from Poetry People, attracted positive engagement and encouraged the understanding, value and enjoyment of heritage.

Due to the success of the film, East Suffolk Council commissioned a second film in South Lowestoft’s High Street Heritage Action Zone titled ‘Spread a Little Kirkleyness’. Both films contributed to over 35,000 views on social media.

This wonderful collaboration with creative partners, using the memories and images of Lowestoft people, shows how history can be brought to life for local communities. It encourages a deeper sense of belonging, understanding and appreciation of the historic environment they work, live and shop in every day.

Poetry People went on to produce a book of the two poems, and deliver behind-the-scenes talks about their creation during Heritage Open Day events.
