Why is Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria a significant Roman site?

This resource will help pupils find out about some of the key locations along Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria. Using the StoryMap and the PPT, students will have the opportunity to explore archaeological remains and artefacts linked to Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria and to understand why Hadrian’s Wall is such a significant Roman site in Britain.

Teaching idea

By using the Hadrian’s Wall StoryMap and PPT pupils will use primary and secondary evidence to find out about Hadrian’s Wall in general, as well as some of the key sites on Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria. They will have the opportunity to formulate their own questions about Hadrian’s Wall and to use the StoryMap and PPT to explore answers to their questions.

Pupils will consider change over time and diversity on Hadrian’s Wall. They will analyse primary evidence and artefacts from Hadrian’s Wall and will reflect on what they tell us about the Romans in Cumbria. They will also consider the significance of the wall as an internationally important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pupils will be invited to share their understanding and appreciation of Hadrian’s Wall by taking part in the Historic England Missing Pieces Project.
