Wordsworth House, Main Street, Cockermouth, Cumbria

William Wordsworth was born in this house in 1770. Pevsner describes Wordsworth House as 'quite a swagger house for such a town'. It was built in 1745 for the then High Sheriff of Cumberland, Joshua Lucock and was bought by Sir James Lowther in 1761. John Wordsworth, the poet's father, was Lowther's agent and so lived in the house. Wordsworth left here aged 8 after his mother died.
