Wery Wall, Bridge Lane, Lancaster, Lancashire
These are fragments of stone from the wall of a 4th century Roman fort. It apparently housed a cavalry (horse) unit. It was reduced in size in c367 AD to form a 'Saxon Shore' type fort. The Wery Wall is mentioned as a boundary in documents dating from the 11th to 18th centuries, when its remains may have been more extensive. Its Roman origins were confirmed by excavations carried out in the early 1970s.
