Wells House Hydropathic Establishment, Ilkley, West Yorkshire

A view looking onto Wells House Hydropathic Establishment from Barmishaw. The building in the foreground is the water pumping station. Hydros were popular with Victorians who went to them to improve their health or to try and cure illnesses. They were similar to spas and offered a variety of different baths and water treatments. They were more like a hotel than a hospital. Wells House (1860) was later used as a college and is now (2012) residential apartments.
