Wavertree Garden Suburb, Liverpool, Merseyside

These two semi-detached houses in Fieldway were built in 1913 and designed by G. L. Sutcliffe. They were built in a cottage style from brick partly coated in roughcast and with a tile roof. They have had very little alteration. They are part of Wavertree Garden Suburb and stand close to Fieldway Green. Planned housing developments were built by many towns following the principles of the Garden Suburb movement. This was Liverpool's and was established by Henry Vivian. Building began in 1910 and finished in 1915, when 360 houses out of a planned 1800 had been built. Wide grass verges and open greens were features of Garden Suburbs.
