Village Hall, High Street, Marsham, Norfolk

This building was built in 1857. It was built as a "Mutual Improvement Institution". It also has the inscriptions "J. H. Warnes, May 10th 1859" and "This Institute was established by George Shreeve, November 2nd 1857". The bricks on the porch also have inscriptions, including "Miss L. Warnes". Mutual Improvement societies were small groups of people who got together to educate themselves. A programme of classes, readings and discussions was usually set up. The teaching was done voluntarily by the members themselves. The aim was to allow people to improve their three R's (reading, writing & arithmetic).
