Unitarian Chapel, 39 Newington Green, Stoke Newington, Greater London

According to the plaque this chapel was "Erected A.D.1708, enlarged A.D.1860." An extension was added behind in the 19th century for a Sunday School. In 2010 this was the oldest unitarian chapel still in use in Britain. In the 18th century it was the focus for non-Conformist activity in the area and for a group of radical intellectuals. One of these was Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) who established her own school at Newington Green in 1784. She is known as the 'Mother of Feminism' due to the importance of her book 'A Vindication of the Rights of Woman' written in 1792.
