Union Mill, Upgang Lane, Whitby, North Yorkshire

The foundation stone for union mill was laid by T. Fishburn and T. Broderick in June 1800 after a group of local businessmen formed the Union Mill Society. It provided cheap grain for local poor people. Members and shareholders of the union were able to buy grain at cost price. Each member had their own ticket which was punched each time they recived a batch of grain. The mill was damaged in a storm in October 1880 and again on July 1888. Shortly afterwards it stopped working. The windmill itself was demolished in 1923. The building was recently (2010) converted into upmarket flats.
