Thirlwall Castle, Thirlwall, Northumberland

This castle was probably built in the 14th century. Much of the stone used to build it was taken from the nearby Hadrian's Wall. It is first documented in 1360. It was probably never lived in by the Thirlwall family, just used as a stronghold. It was never attacked by either the Scots or the English. It was commandeered by Scottish troops helping the Parliamentarians during the Civil War. They damaged it to such an extent that it was never repaired.
