The Retreat Hospital, Heslington Road, York

This building was built as a mental hospital (lunatic asylum). It was built in 1793-97 by John Bevans of London for The Society of Friends (Quakers). The hospital gained an early reputation throughout Europe for its humane treatment of the insane. Quaker asylums in America were modelled on it.
