The Quadrangle, North Yard, Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth

The Quadrangle includes a foundry, smithery, boiler and machine shop, offices and store. They were built in 1852-61 and designed by William Scamp and Col. G T Greene of the Admiralty Works Department in an Italianate style. The North Yard opened in 1853. The design of the Quadrangle grew from a group of separate workshops round an open court to a roofed building. There were two beam engines to power the foundry forges.
