The Monument, Monument Street, City of London, Greater London
The pedestal of The Monument, designed by Sir Christopher Wren to commemorate the Great Fire of London. The Act of Parliament which provided for the rebuilding of the City of London after the Great Fire also provided for the commemoration of the Fire with a monument. It was built of Portland stone in 1671-7. In front of the monument is a man with a cart advertising 'Carter, Paterson and Co, Carriers & Railway Agents. It is now used to describe a stop on the London Underground (Tube), 'Monument' is the stop between 'Cannon Street' and 'Tower Hill' on the Circle and District lines.
