The Millennium Dome beside the River Thames at dusk, Greenwich, Greater London Authority

The Millennium Dome was built to house an exhibition called the 'Millennium Experience'. The exhibition celebrated the beginning of the third millennium, which began in the year 2000, and was similar to the Festival of Britain (1951) or a World's Fair. It had themed areas called 'Who we are', 'What we do', and 'Where we live' which were divided into smaller zones. The Millennium Dome is one of the top ten largest buildings in the world by volume. The dimensions of the dome reference time: there are twelve supporting towers (one for each month of the year or hour of a clock face) and the dome is 365m in diameter (one metre for every day of the year).
