The Gate House, Castle Street, Leicester

This house was built in 1446-7. The ground floor is made of stone but the upper floor is timber framed. This type of timber framing is called 'close studding'. Tree-ring dating of the timbers also suggests that it was originally two houses but was knocked in to one in c1590.
