The Garth, 60 Marygate, York

This building was originally The York Grey Coat School. It was a charity school for girls opened in 1705. It was created as the result of a public subscription meeting attended by the Archbishop, the Dean of York, the Lord Mayor, aldermen of the city and other patrons. It remained the Grey Coat School for Girls from 1705 to 1784. In 1874 the school moved to newly-built premises in Monkgate.
