The Black Gate and Keep, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear

The 'New Castle' at Newcastle upon Tyne was founded by the Normans to command a crossing of the River Tyne. The Keep was rebuilt in 1168-78 while the Black Gate dates from 1247. A railway line now passes between the keep and gatehouse.
