The Bar Convent, Blossom Street, York

This was the Convent and school of The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built by Thomas Atkinson. The entrance range was built in 1786-9. It fronted an earlier Chapel block of 1766-9. In 1790-3 an outer range was added. In 1834-5 an inner range north of the Chapel block was added. In 1844-6 the Chapel block was altered and a Schoolroom block on the corner of Nunnery Lane was added.
