Stoney Road Allotments, Coventry

During the 19th century the demand for allotments grew dramatically and became an important political issue. Between 1873 and 1895 the amount of plots available doubled. The demand has fluctuated since, but tends to rise in times of recession and fall when the economy is strong. Allotments also give people in towns and cities a space of their own to sit and watch the world, as this gardener is doing.
