Ritson's shipyard, Maryport, Cumbria

A general view of Ritson's shipyard, showing a ship under construction on a slipway. The town of Maryport developed as an industrial centre throughout the 19th century. The port developed and shipyards, such as Wood's yard and Ritson's yard were established. Ritsons was famous for launching ships broadside into the River Ellen because it was not wide enough to allow ships to be launched the usual way.
