Norham Castle, Norham, Northumberland
This ruined castle was owned by the bishops of Durham. It was originally a motte and bailey castle. It was built in 1121 for Bishop Flambard. It was then rebuilt in stone in c1157 by Richard of Wolviston for Bishop Puiset. The keep was extensively remodelled in 1422-25. There was also much rebuilding in 1513-15 for Bishop Ruthal. During the late 18th and early 19th century one of the south turrets was turned in to a gothic cottage. The castle lies within a possible Iron Age fort. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
