Monument of William Webb, Church Street, Old Hunstanton, Norfolk
This gravestone to William Webb was made in 1784. Its inscription gives valuable insight to smuggling in the 18th century. It reads In memory of William Webb, Late of the 15 L(igh)t D(ragoo)ns who was/Shot from his horse by a party of smugglers/On 26 Sep(tember) 1784/Aged 26 years. I am not dead, but Sleepeth here/And when the trumpet sound I will appear/Four balls through me pearced (sic) there way/Hard it was I had no time to pray."
