Loraine memorial stone, Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland

This memorial stone was placed here in 1728 by Sir William Loraine Bart. It replaced an earlier stone on the same spot. Both commemorate Robert Loraine. He was 'Barbarously Murder'd in this place by the Scots in 1483'. Apparently he was murdered 'for his good service to his country against their (the Scots) thefts and robbery'. He was on his way home from church.
