Littlemore Hospital, Littlemore, Oxfordshire

This building was originally the Oxford County and City Pauper Lunatic Asylum. It was designed in 1844 by R N Clark and opened in 1846. It was probably built in response to the 1845 Lunacy Act and the County Asylum Act. These meant that local authorities had to provide public asylums for all pauper lunatics. At the time the word lunatic was used to refer to anyone with mental health problems.
