Jubilee Pool, Battery Road, Penzance, Cornwall

This seaside lido was built in 1935 to the designs of Captain F Latham, the Borough Engineer. It was built from painted concrete and juts out into the sea. The concrete has been moulded in order to create a graceful series of Art Deco curves. This is a particularly striking design, which received much praise at the time. It is now the finest surviving example of its type with the exception of the Saltdean Lido in Brighton. Before the 1920s sea bathing was seen as something to benefit people's health. After that time it became a leisure activity and this change led to the building of lidos all around the country.
