Huntington Castle, Huntington, Herefordshire

The exact date of this castle is unknown. During the reign of Henry III (1216-1272) it was in the possession of William de Braose. The stone keep was built in c1228 by William. In 1248 it passed to Humphrey de Bohun. During 1263-5 it was involved in the Baron's War on the side of the de Mortimers. In 1372 the last Bohun heir died and it passed, through his daughter, to Henry, Earl of Derby (later Henry IV). In 1399 when Henry came to the throne it went to Edward de Stafford. In 1403 the castle was re-fortified against attack from Owain Glendower. In 1460 it was said to be worth nothing. In 1521 one of the towers is recorded as being used as a prison. In 1564 it passed to the Crown and was then sold to Sir Ambrose Cave for £6,328 5s 0d.
