Holy Trinity Bridge, East Street, Crowland, Lincolnshire
Crowland Bridge is unique in Britain. It was built in 1360-90 by the Benedictine brethren of Crowland Abbey. It went over tributaries of the rivers Nene and Welland. It now stands high and dry near the market place. It is formed of three pointed half-arches in the form of a triangle. On the south arm is a seated figure in stone. It may be the figure of Christ in Majesty or of King Elthelbald, founder of Crowland Abbey. A wooden triangular bridge was known to have existed on this site in 943.
