Fire engine, Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire

Outside of London fire brigades were financed by wealthy benefactors or dependant on bands of volunteers. It was not until 1938 that local authorities were required to provide a free fire-fighting service. Mrs Allix donated this fire engine to the town in 1791.
