Emma and Leonard Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London

A photograph of Emma Darwin and son Leonard in c1854 from Down House. Emma (1808-1896) married Charles Darwin in 1839. They had 10 children. Leonard (1850-1948) was their fourth son. He joined the army in 1871, rising to the rank of Major. After leaving the army he followed his interests in science. In 1912 the University of Cambridge conferred on him the honorary degree of doctor of science. He married twice but had no children.
