Cutting grass at Ilfracombe, Devon

This picture from the Edwardian period shows men using scythes to cut grass. Both men are in the act of sharpening their blades, which they hold by the blunt outside edge. Despite advances in mechanisation many processes and landscapes were better suited to manual methods of work.
