Cleveland Buildings, Cleveland Street, Middlesbrough

This pair of houses date from c.1835. A circular blue plaque, at the right of the entrance, records: "H.W.F. BOLCKOW and JOHN VAUGHAN founders of the CLEVELAND IRON TRADE lived here 1841-1860". These two men were very important to the growth of the town. Carl Ferdinand Henry Bolckow became the first mayor and, later on, the first MP for Middlesbrough. In the house on the right there is an Adam style marble fireplace, recovered from the Cunard liner Aquitania.
