Chesters Bridge Reconstruction, Chollerford, Northumberland

This is a reconstruction drawing of Chesters Bridge. The bridge was a Roman stone bridge. It carried Hadrian's Wall across the North Tyne, close to Chesters Roman Fort. The bridge had two phases of construction. The first bridge was built under Hadrian, probably between AD 122 and AD 130. It was carried on eight stone piers. That is what this drawing shows. The bridge was approached by a ramp carrying a road known as the Military Way. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
