Chain Link Ferry, Sandbanks, Poole

The first Sandbanks ferry sailed in July 1926 and could carry 15 cars. During the summer of 1926 it carried 100,000 passengers and 12,000 cars. The ferry company was set up to allow cars to cross Poole Harbour between Sandbanks and Studland in Dorset, thus saving them 25 miles on their journey. The ferry shown here is Ferry No 3. It ran from 1958-1994 and carried 28 cars at a time. During its service it carried 650,000 cars and 1 million passengers each year. The service is still in operation today (2011).
