'Round Here
By harnessing the connective power of music, 'Round Here seeks to strengthen connections with our surroundings, in particular the local high street.
An album of new compositions have been created by six High Street Heritage Action Zone communities across England in partnership with Live Music Now (a social impact and music organisation) and local young musicians. Live musical performances of the new work were held across all six places between 10-17 July 2022.
From these performances a series of music videos, curated by a young digital creatives Con Divers and Harriet Mellor, have been created to celebrate the secrets of the heritage in our high streets.
Live Music Now musicians are experts in working alongside those with reduced access to live music throughout the UK, crafting engaging concerts and residencies across a range of genres, harnessing the connective power of music.
'Round Here is commissioned by Historic England as part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zones Cultural Programme.
'The Beauty of Brierley Hill'
Brierley Hill
Chris Roberts along with Zachary Lowe worked with Brockmore Primary School to write and compose a brand-new song about the High Street in Brierley Hill.
“The Beauty of Brierley Hill” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating aspects of Brierley Hill’s heritage: the steelworks, the cinema, the hill and the High Street.
On 10 July, the song was premiered at Civic Theatre.
Produced in association with Dudley Council and the Brierley Hill High Street Heritage Action Zone cultural consortium.
'This Is Our Home'
Tottenham
Elliott Morris and Jamal Jones worked with Vale School & The Brook School to write and compose a brand-new song about the High Street in Tottenham.
“This Is Our Home” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating icons of Tottenham’s heritage: the old roller disco hall, the 149 bus, the market and the pubs.
The song was premiered as part of Haringey Schools Music Festival in the Park.
Produced in Association with Haringey Council and the Tottenham High Street Heritage Action Zone cultural consoritum.
'Chatham Intra Is Where We Meet'
Chatham Intra
Thomas Harvey and Dani Osoba worked with Trinity School to write and compose a brand-new song about the High Street in Chatham Intra.
“Chatham Intra Is Where We Meet” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating icons of Chatham’s heritage: The Ship Inn, Sun Pier and the dockyard.
On 15 July, the song was premiered at Sun Pier House, as part of IntraFest 2022.
Produced in association with Medway Council and the Old High Street Intra High Street Heritage Action Zone cultural consortium.
'Come With Me'
Huddersfield
Chris Ruffoni alongside Jessica Whyke, who performs under the name PENNY, worked with Castle Hill School to write and compose a brand-new song about the High Street in Huddersfield.
“Come With Me” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating the icons that make up Huddersfield's heritage: the castle, the warmth of the people and the centre of town.
On 15 July, the song was premiered at Brian Jackson House.
Produced in association with Kirklees Council and the Huddersfield High Street Heritage Action Zone cultural consortium.
'Dancing Above The Sea'
Weston-super-Mare
Tara Baggott along with William Crawford worked with Bay Tree School, Herons' Moor School and Acer House care home to write and compose a brand-new song about the High Street in Weston-super-Mare.
“Dancing Above the Sea” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating icons of Weston-super-Mare’s heritage: the Pier, the Tropicana, Weston rock and the sea.
On 16 July, the song was premiered on Weston-super-Mare High Street Heritage Action Zone.
Produced in association with North Somerset Council and Culture Weston.
'When We've Finished At The Wire Works'
Barrow-in-Furness
Maz O’Connor, along with Jorgie Wilson worked with the George Hastwell School and Risedale Care Home to write and compose a brand-new song about the Barrow-in-Furness High Street.
“When We’ve Finished at the Wire Works” was born out of workshops between the musicians and members of the local community, celebrating the wire works, the cellophane plant, the shipyard, the hotel and all who worked there.
On 17 July, the song was premiered at Barrow Library.
