Where Light Falls audio description for sight impaired visitors: site 4

You are standing at site 4, in the porch of the new cathedral to the left of the stairs that lead up to the old Coventry Cathedral Ruins.

In front of you is the wall of the old cathedral building which will become the canvas for words from the poem to appear. The words are white against a black background.

The first verse of poetry appears:

“Lay down threads of light on fallen city walls.”

As it does, the word “fallen” travels down to the ground, and then bounces back up to reform the line

As the words “rise again” appear the word “rise” appears as if coming over the horizon.

The following lines appear beneath:

“with hands extended, friendships, twin cities: a stone restored

in the ruins becomes a cross made for the Frauenkirche.”

After a few moments, they disappear to make way for the new text:

“Step for a moment from the carousel by the market,

a new city’s giddy spin of concrete arcades, mosaics,

and find the quiet embrace of the ruined cathedral

under the wing of the new, Spence’s act of faith.”

The word “mosaics” appear to be made up of small tiles and glow brightly before returning to normal. The word faith glows brightly as the words of this verse fade away.

In their place the next line of verse appears:

“Oh Sisters! Godiva on horseback, the sound of requiems,

sci-fi symphonies of sirens, the city catches a glimpse

of itself in new glass from the old cathedral steps.”

The word “glass” shatters and falls before reforming again.

The lines disappear and the next verse comes into view with the lines:

“Our cathedral, echoing with the sound of shuffling feet,

with the resonances of other people; I see, I hear,

then I open a new sense that I was not aware of.

Our cathedral, our community’s heart, reverberating

2-Tone town walls welcoming, celebrating our differences.

Do you feel better than when you went in?”

The word “echoing” vibrates and appears to have a shadow before returning back to form

A thick white line covers the line “celebrating our differences” as the letters of those words turn black, hinting at the black and white 2 tone colours of Ska music.

The line “do you feel better than when you went in?” grows larger at the bottom of the lines of text.

The words fade away and it is the end of this projection.

Make your way to site 5, up the steps into the ruins of the old cathedral and focusses on the spire.
