West Mural Tower, Auckland Castle

West Mural Tower, Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland, DL14 7NR

Listed at grade I, the West Mural Tower contains the remains of the West precinct wall of Auckland Castle, running north-south. It is a simple two-storey structure with a small (roughly square) yard to its south side. The east wall of the yard contains a blocked gateway, flanked by tall piers with ball finials. The gateway aligns with the north side of the market place and North Bondgate beyond. It was fully restored in 2018 from a dangerous ruin to a useable building on two floors, heated and lit, and basically presented to show the construction and design of this fascinating and ancient building.
