Wagon Repair Shop, Bowes Railway Museum

Wagon Repair Shop, Bowes Railway Museum, Springwell Village, Sunderland NE9 7QJ

Bowes Railway, a scheduled monument, is the only cable hauled railway still in operation in the UK. It was opened in 1826 and laid out by George Stephenson to serve Springwell Colliery. The Wagon Shop was originally built as a massive coal bunker and then converted into a wagon repair shop in 1932 following the closure of the colliery. The museum is open to visitors and when possible the haulage is demonstrated in action.
