Strawberry Hill, Waldegrave Road, Twickenham, London TW1 4SX
Georgian house and a fine example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture and interior decoration. It was built in 1698 as a modest house, later transformed into a ‘little Gothic Castle’ by Horace Walpole the son of England's first prime minister. Between 1747 and 1792 Walpole doubled its size, creating extraordinary rooms and adding towers and battlements. The house was a tourist site in its own day and has survived into the present. It’s rural surroundings are now gone but its charm undiminished. Following an £8.9 million restoration it is now open to the public as a 'fairy tale' experience.
Opening Arrangements
House and Shop open Sundays to Wednesdays 11am to 4pm. Garden and Cafe open Sundays to Thursdays 10am to 4pm House available to host Education and Group tours by prior arrangement outside of the times above.
