St John the Evangelist, High Street

St John the Evangelist, High Street, Penge, Bromley, London SE20 7EQ

This English style church was designed in 1849 by John and Edwin Nash of Bermondsey. The north and south aisles were later enlarged in 1861, while the north and south transepts were added in 1866. Its spire reaches 150 feet high. Inside, in the north aisle, one can see the King Edward VII window executed by William Morris and Co in 1910 ‘after’ Burne Jones, and containing the figures of Temperance and Hope. The elaborate pulpit with the figure of St John the Evangelist is said to have been copied from St Bartholomew’s Sydenham.
