Murgatroyds Brine Works, Brooks Lane, Middlewich, Cheshire, CW10 0JG

Murgatroyd’s Brine Pumps are a scheduled monument located on Brooks Lane in Middlewich. The site includes an original hand-dug shaft dated 1889, which is still intact with three sets of brine pumps, two are John Thom of Patricroft and the third is a submersible Beresford pump. The pumps and associated equipment have all been restored and interpreted with a new walkway through the interior. The exterior houses the original gantry and two Gwynne pumps, alongside displays including a salt pan and hooker cell.

Opening Arrangements

Free public open days held 12 noon to 4pm on 15-16 April, 13-14 May, 10-11 June, 29-30 July, 26-27 August, 16-17 September. Group and school bookings available 2 May to 21 October (charges apply)
