Hadlow Tower, Hadlow Castle

Hadlow Tower, Hadlow Castle, High Street, Hadlow, TN11 0EG

Hadlow Tower, which is listed Grade I, is the most spectacular part of what remains of Hadlow Castle. It is essentially a folly, designed to emphasise the wealth and social standing of its owner, and is a prominent landmark not only within the village of Hadlow, but also in views of the landscape, which in this area is largely open and undulating. The building consists of a main tower of seven storeys, which is octagonal on plan, with a circular staircase turret to the south west side, giving access to approximately two-thirds of the height of the tower, and a secondary, square, tower of four storeys, which is much more domestic in nature and which adjoins the main tower on the west side, with its own circular stair turret. As originally built, the octagonal tower was topped with a tall lantern, and the whole was based on James Wyatt’s ill-fated tower at Fonthill Abbey.
