The gateway, together with the screen retaining wall, forms the western boundary of St Mary's Church, a Grade I listed parish church. The church occupies an imposing elevated position in the historic core of Stockport and overlooks the town's market place. The gateway, wall and fountain are listed at Grade II* in their own right, reflecting not only the architectural quality of the structures themselves but also their importance as a ceremonial link between the church and the Market Hall. The structure was constructed in 1812 by Lewis Wyatt as an elaborate Gothic screen with three pointed archways with crocketed finials above the centre arch. The ashlar walls incorporate a drinking fountain in granite dated 1858. the gateway includes stone steps that lead from street level to the raised churchyard behind.
