Situated at the heart of this ancient settlement, the front part of Ashwell Museum comprises the remaining two bays of a medieval house [ca 1500] which was extended to the rear in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Early in the twentieth century the building underwent refurbishment and was extended The early sixteenth century timber frame is jettied and of two storeys with a gable above, and faces on to Swan Street. The timberwork was exposed as part of the 1930s ‘restoration’ when infill panels of cement on expanded metal lath were added.
