Description

In 2022-23 Historic England commissioned several photographers to work with local communities to capture images representative of their local high streets. This formed part of the Picturing High Streets project. In Tower Hamlets, Rehan Jamil was commissioned as photographer. He wrote the following text to describe his work on the project: "My project captures the community undergoing change. My focus on the three distinct groups—the children, local residents, and traders - provides a multi-faceted perspective on the dynamics of Petticoat Lane market and its surroundings in Tower Hamlets, London." This image is one of a series produced as a result of the residency, during a collaboration with pupils from Tiger Class at Canon Barnett Primary School. Rehan Jamil wrote the following text about these images: "The collaboration with Canon Barnett Primary school's Tiger Class was a valuable experience, allowing the children to engage with their community through the lens of photography. The resulting outdoor projection at Toynbee Hall in October 2022 was a wonderful way to showcase their perspectives to a broader audience." This series of images were taken by the children.

This photograph was taken by Mariyah in collaboration with Rehan Jamil. Mariyah says: "I took this picture because it seemed funny. It's a no entry sign and someone has spray painted a smiley face." 'Picturing England's High Streets' commission by Photofusion, Historic England and Photoworks.
