Description

In 2022-23 Historic England commissioned several photographers to work with local communities to capture images representative of their local high streets. This formed part of the Picturing High Streets project. In Tower Hamlets, Rehan Jamil was commissioned as photographer. He wrote the following text to describe his work on the project: "My project captures the community undergoing change. My focus on the three distinct groups—the children, local residents, and traders - provides a multi-faceted perspective on the dynamics of Petticoat Lane market and its surroundings in Tower Hamlets, London." This is one of a series produced as a result of the residency, focusing on portraits of schoolchildren from Tiger class at Canon Barnett Primary School, who took part in a project run as part of the residency. The photographer wrote that: "The students from Canon Barnett Primary School displayed their creativity by selecting shapes, colours, and textures to personalise their portrait backgrounds." 'Picturing England's High Streets' commission by Photofusion, Historic England and Photoworks.
