Description

In 2022-23 Historic England commissioned several photographers to work with local communities to capture images representative of their local high streets. This formed part of the Picturing High Streets project. In Tower Hamlets, Rehan Jamil was commissioned as photographer. He wrote the following text to describe his work on the project: "My project captures the community undergoing change. My focus on the three distinct groups—the children, local residents, and traders - provides a multi-faceted perspective on the dynamics of Petticoat Lane market and its surroundings in Tower Hamlets, London." This image is from one of three series' produced as a result of the residency, and focuses on portraits of the local community. Rehan Jamil wrote the following text about this set: "My decision to spend the second year producing portraits of the local community highlights my interest in capturing the human element of this evolving space. By showcasing the diversity and positivity of the community members, not only documenting their lives but also telling a story of resilience." 'Picturing England's High Streets' commission by Photofusion, Historic England and Photoworks.
