Description

Sydney Vivian Frederick Leleux (1913-1988) was a prehistorian who was tutored by Grinsell, Callendar, and Atkinson. This collection comprises his archaeological research, the majority of which was carried out during his academic studies.

The collection is divided into four series:

Series 1: four albums, titled Miscellanea Archaeologica I - IV, containing handwritten notes, cuttings, drawings, postcards, and original photographic prints, compiled by Leleux during the course of his studies. These albums primarily focus on Prehistoric and Roman archaeology in England, Wales, Europe and beyond. The original prints are accompanied by reference numbers which relate to negatives, the majority of which are held by the Historic England Archive.

Series 2: two photograph albums containing original prints, presumably taken by Leleux. The first album, labelled Album 5, contains images depicting medieval and later structures, and includes some industrial buildings and sites such as Bridgwater Docks, a quarry at Nuneaton, and Berkhampstead Railway Station. The second album, labelled Album 6, depicts prehistoric and Roman remains in England and Wales. Both albums contain some colour photography alongside the black and white images. The Archive does not hold the negatives for the prints in these albums.

Series 3: Three notebooks entitled Medieval History I - III, containing course notes, maps, cuttings, postcards etc relating to medieval archaeology and buildings. Two of the three notebooks also contain original photographic prints, for which the Archive does not hold the negatives.

Series 4: Typed manuscript by Leleux on Cornish Fogous, including photographic prints, for which the Archive does not hold the negatives.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2 parts, in 2002 and 2011.
