Collection: J W Chase photographs of industrial archaeology, stationary engines and pumps

The collection contains black and white photographs and negatives taken by Jim Chase (1915-2003) in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. They show primarily engines, pumps and other machinery at industrial sites in England such as quarries, mines, breweries, waterworks and mills. The images are mostly interior views of these sites showing machinery and the sites include mines and quarries in Cornwall and pumping stations at Kew Bridge (London), Crofton (Wiltshire) and Blagdon (Avon).

The collection comprises 1 photograph album containing 192 photographs, 82 additional photographs, and about 3100 35mm strip negatives, many of which are half frames. The album contains 7 sheets of loose notes and sketches. There is some unidentified images and some which are identified as foreign.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by the NMR between 2005 and 2006.

Jim Chase (1915-2003) was born in Southampton and became a marine engineer and then a boiler and pressure vessel inspector. He was the first secretary of the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group.
