The collection contains 658 photographic prints taken between 1950 and 1965 by George Charles Green (1915-2006) an official photographer working with the Air Ministry. The prints relate to a variety of projects, services or official functions: Royal family events including funeral of George VI and Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. There are images of: early dual-carriageway & motorway construction in London, Kent & Wales; RAF Memorial at Runnymede and views of aircraft on the ground; construction and interiors of London Airport (later Heathrow) and detailed coverage of early air traffic control systems; Festival of Britain buildings and floodlighting in London; pictorial landscapes; and men and women apprentices in various trades photographed for Ministry of Labour purposes.

The collection has been divided into the following series: London scenes and events, Road and bridge construction projects, London (later Heathrow) Airport construction, Royal event at Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede, Royal event at unidentified airbase, Royal event possibly coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, State funerals, Royal visits, Trades, and Other subjects.

The collection also contains 1 negative, and papers including G.C. Green's official entry tickets for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II events.

Archival History

The collection was given to the NMR in 2009.

George Charles Green was born in Peckham, London on 2 June 1915. He joined the RAF as a photographer in World War Two and after the war joined the Air Ministry for whom he photographed aircraft, buildings, construction projects and royal events. He died on 24 August 2006.
