Description

This collection consists of over 30,000 35mm slides compiled by the Department of the Environment. The collection was formed in 1954 to meet the needs of planners and architects in the former Ministry of Housing and Local Government and was subsequently expanded to illustrate many of the responsibilities and interests of both the DOE (including the Property Services Agency) and the Department of Transport in the UK and overseas.

Subjects covered by the collection include: Agriculture, Business Areas, Civic Buildings, Communities, Climate, Departmental Publications, Education, Employment, Geology, Geography, Health, Industry, Local Government, Land Ownership, Minerals, Open Spaces, Population, Regional Divisions, Residential, Social Conditions, Topography, Transport and Communications, and Utilities.

There are typed indexes to the collection by these classifications; and also by subject and geographic location.

Archival History

Received Via : Museum of London, 1991-2 Provenance : Collection formed in 1954 to meet needs of planners and architects in the former Ministry of Housing and Local Government, numbering 35000 slides by 1978. Subsequently transferred to COI in 1983 and rescued from proposed destruction by David Warren of EH
